Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year

On behalf of the Student Council we want to welcome you to a wonderful new year at Nellie McClung School.

Welcome Muffin Mixer – September 6th at 8:15am

Come out and enjoy muffins and coffee with fellow parents, children and Nellie McClung teachers and staff on the first day of school! We have all the volunteers we need for this event. We look forward to seeing you there.

The Casino is Coming…We Need You!

Nellie McClung School has the opportunity to raise more than $65,000 at an upcoming casino, and we need your help to make it happen! The opportunity to volunteer at a casino comes around every 2 years and is by far our largest fundraising opportunity.   Nellie McClung is scheduled for Saturday, October 29 and Sunday, October 30. Over the two days, we need almost 40 volunteers to cover different shifts.

The effort is not only worth it but critical to our ability to raise funds that go towards extra resources and experiences that enrich learning for students from Kindergarten to Grade 6.  For example, casino funds can help pay for field trips, science kits, instruments, books, art supplies, sports equipment, artist-in-residence programs, iPads, laptops, Smart boards, Makerspace materials and more. Simply put, the impact is amazing.

Volunteers don’t need any experience to volunteer for the Casino. We won’t be dealing cards or managing games, but doing behind-the-scenes work with assistance from advisors who are there to help. We know parents are busy — if you are unable to help, perhaps an aunt, uncle or grandparent is available. The shifts are daytime or evening, approximately 8 hours long. If you can help with just one shift, you alone raise approximately $2,000 and will be recognized as a Nellie Hero on our webpage.

For more information, contact Danae, our Casino Coordinator, at  To sign up, go to SignUpGenius-Casino  and choose a time that works for you, then Danae will contact you with the details.  We need to get most volunteers signed up before the end of the school year, so please call or email as soon as possible. Thanks!

Parents Can Make a Difference

Nellie McClung School Council and Parent Advisory Council needs to fill vacancies

Studies show that students benefit when their parents or guardians actively support their success at school. Students who have positive parent/guardian involvement are more likely to be motivated, earn higher grades, have better behaviour and social skills, and continue their education to a higher level

One of the ways parents can help is by joining the Nellie McClung School Council and/or Parent Advisory Council. The councils meets once per month to discuss school operations and activities with the principal, hear from teachers about the work they’re doing in the classroom, and plan special events and fundraising activities. Several positions are being vacated this year, and we are looking forward to welcoming new parents and guardians who bring their enthusiasm and ideas to the table.

Descriptions of the executive positions are detailed here There are other ways to contribute to council as well. See organizer positions open here. If you have any questions  about these positions or are interested in them, please contact our Chair at or our Principal at
